The Myth of The Artist (with a Capital "A")

I have recently wondered if we artists are not different from other people - that perhaps the myth of the crazy or tortured artist was conceived to allow us to drink too much and sleep with your girlfriend. But I have my doubts. So I ask:

What does an artist look like?
How are they/we different from other people?

What do you think?

  1. You know, I think I once wondered the same thing. But really artists are just like the work they produce. They come in a variety of style. Most of the people I know, who are successful and great artists, don't look like the "typical movie portrayed" artist. They just look like everyday people.

But you knwo what, every know and then,w e have or do somethign a tad bit "odd" that really puts us in that "typicl artist" categiry LOL

  2. Vanessa, I agree that real artists are just regular people. But then I wonder if some non-artists somehow want us to be tortured, crazy or weird. That they want/need/enjoy the theater that may potentially come with being an acquaintance of an Artiste.

  3. since most artists i know have day jobs, i agree with you that artists look just like everyone else. but they do seem to share one particular trait...have you ever noticed that artists are able to drift around and find anything/everything interesting? there's a tendency to wander without seeming purpose. but of course, there is a point -- the world must be explored! of course, "artist" can cover many types of explorers. :)

  4. I agree with Betty -- I think artists, like good writers, are good seers (see-ers). And I agree with Vanessa that people are people. I do think the artists that get the most hype tend to fit the more exotic mold. But I think that's theater and PR (and maybe an excuse to behave badly, too!). Which doesn't negate the value of their art, either. Unfortunately!

  5. Oh, it is a good excuse to be naughty! (and disorganized) but the best ones are not disorganized (naughty is another matter entirely...)
